Skipping your MOT is not just an inconvenience — it’s a criminal offence. Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000, points on your licence, and could even invalidate your car insurance.
⚠️ Important: If your MOT has expired, the only time you can legally drive your car is to attend a pre-booked MOT appointment. You cannot drive for any other reason.
How to Do a Free MOT Check on Your Car
A free MOT check tells you the current MOT status of any UK-registered vehicle — including the expiry date, the last test result, and any advisory notices. All you need is the car’s registration number.
Find your vehicle registration number
Your reg number (e.g. AB12 CDE) is printed on your number plate and on your vehicle logbook (V5C). You don’t need to know your MOT certificate number.
Use an official MOT check tool
Visit the official DVLA MOT checker or use the Express MOT check tool on our homepage. Enter your reg — the check is completely free and takes under 10 seconds.
Review your MOT status and expiry date
You’ll see your current MOT status (valid or expired), the exact date it runs out, and the history of previous tests — including any failures and advisories.
Book your next MOT if needed
If your MOT is due or expired, book your test straight away. You can book up to one month before your current MOT expires without losing any days on your certificate.
💡 Tip: You can do a car MOT check UK on any vehicle, not just your own. This is useful when buying a used car — always check the MOT history before you pay.
Understanding Your MOT Results
When your car goes in for an MOT test, the inspector checks dozens of safety-critical items. The result will be one of three outcomes:
| Result | What it means | Can you drive? |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | Your car has met all safety and environmental standards. You’ll receive a new MOT certificate valid for 12 months. | Yes ✅ |
| Fail | Your car has one or more major or dangerous defects. Repairs must be made before the car can be driven legally on public roads. | No (unless driving directly home for repairs) ❌ |
| Advisory | Items that don’t currently fail the MOT but could become a problem. You should monitor these and arrange repair soon. | Yes, but get advisories fixed soon ⚠️ |
What Does an MOT Test Check?
The MOT inspection covers over 100 individual checks across your vehicle. The key areas inspected include:
Bodywork & structure — The vehicle’s structure must be free from excessive corrosion or damage that could affect safety. Brakes — Braking performance, condition of brake pads, discs, pipes, and handbrake. Lights — All exterior lights must work correctly, including headlights, brake lights, and indicators. Steering & suspension — Checks for play, damage, and worn components. Tyres — Minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters, and no bulges or cuts. Exhaust & emissions — The exhaust must be intact and emissions must fall within legal limits. Windscreen & wipers — The windscreen must be free from large chips and the wipers must clear the screen effectively. Seatbelts — All seatbelts must be present, undamaged, and function correctly.
✅ Good to know: An MOT does not check the overall mechanical condition of your car — for example, engine wear or clutch condition. These are assessed as part of a full vehicle service, which is separate from the MOT.

5 Tips to Help Your Car Pass Its MOT First Time
Preparing your car before the test can save you the cost and hassle of a retest. Here are the most common — and most avoidable — reasons cars fail their MOT:
1. Check all your lights. Faulty bulbs are the number one reason for MOT failures. Walk around your car and check every light — headlights (main beam and dipped), brake lights, rear lights, indicators, fog lights, and reversing lights. Replace any blown bulbs before your test.
2. Check your tyre tread and pressure. Tyres need a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Use a 20p coin to check — if the outer band of the coin is visible, your tyres are likely too worn. Also check tyre pressure against the figures in your owner’s manual.
3. Top up your screen wash. This is a quick win — an empty screen wash reservoir is an automatic MOT failure. Make sure the washer jets work correctly too.
4. Check your horn. Your horn must work. Give it a test before you drive to the garage.
5. Check for warning lights. If your engine management light (or any other dashboard warning light) is illuminated, this will likely cause a failure. Get any warning lights investigated before your MOT.
